Email Delivery Statuses
Understanding email delivery statuses helps you quickly identify whether an email was successfully processed, delivered, delayed, blocked, or requires corrective action. By monitoring delivery events and following recommended practices, you can improve email reliability and maintain a healthy sender reputation.
Overview
This article explains the various email statuses that may appear in reports or message details. Understanding these statuses can help you determine the current state of an email and identify whether any action is required.
Important Information
A Delivered status means that the recipient's mail server successfully accepted the email for processing. However, this does not always mean that the email has reached the recipient's inbox.
The email may still be subject to additional filtering by the recipient's email provider, such as spam filters, security rules, or mailbox settings, which may place the message in another folder (for example, Spam or Junk). If an email shows as Delivered but the recipient cannot locate it, we recommend checking the recipient's spam/junk folders and reviewing any mailbox filtering rules that may be affecting email delivery.Email Status Definitions
Complete Email Delivery Flow
An email goes through multiple stages after it is submitted for delivery. The status of each email event helps identify where the message is in its lifecycle and whether any action may be required.
Possible Email Outcomes
Depending on the recipient's mail server response, email configuration, and recipient actions, an email may also move into one of the following statuses:
1. Processed
The email request was successfully received by the email delivery service and accepted for processing. The message has entered the delivery queue and is waiting to be sent to the recipient's mail server.
2. Deferred
The recipient's mail server temporarily delayed accepting the email. The delivery system will automatically retry sending the message for a period of time.
Common reasons:- Recipient mail server is temporarily unavailable.
- Receiving server is busy or rate limiting requests.
- Temporary network issues.
Customer action: No immediate action is required. The system will continue retrying delivery automatically.
3. Delivered
The recipient's mail server successfully accepted the email.
Please note: A Delivered status confirms acceptance by the recipient's mail server but does not guarantee that the email reached the recipient's inbox. Additional filtering rules such as spam protection, security policies, or mailbox settings may affect final placement.
4. Open
The recipient opened the email.
5. Click
The recipient clicked a tracked link within the email.
6. Bounce
The email could not be delivered to the recipient.
Types of Bounce:- Hard Bounce: Permanent delivery failure, such as an invalid email address or non-existent domain.
- Soft Bounce: Temporary delivery failure, such as a full mailbox or temporary mail server issue.
Customer action: Verify recipient details and correct invalid addresses before resending.
7. Dropped
The email was not sent because delivery was prevented before sending.
Common reasons:- Recipient is on a suppression list.
- Previous bounce or spam complaint exists.
- Email failed sending requirements.
Customer action: Review suppression settings before attempting to resend.
8. Spam Report
The recipient marked the email as spam.
The recipient may be added to a suppression list to prevent future unwanted emails.
9. Unsubscribe
The recipient opted out of receiving future emails through the unsubscribe option.
Future emails should not be sent unless the recipient subscribes again.
10. Group Unsubscribe / Group Resubscribe
Group Unsubscribe: The recipient unsubscribed from a specific email subscription group while remaining subscribed to others.
Group Resubscribe: The recipient subscribed again to a previously unsubscribed email subscription group.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does "Delivered" mean the email reached the recipient's inbox?

Additional filtering rules, such as spam protection, security policies, or mailbox settings, may move the email to another folder such as Spam or Junk.
Q: Why is an email marked as "Deferred"?
A: A Deferred status usually indicates that the recipient's mail server temporarily delayed accepting the email. automatically retries delivery until the email is delivered or the retry period expires.
Q: What should I do if an email bounces?
A: Review the bounce reason, verify the recipient's email address, and determine whether the bounce is temporary or permanent. Correct invalid addresses before attempting to send the email again.
Q: Why was my email dropped?
A: Dropped emails are not sent because delivery was prevented before sending. This commonly occurs when the recipient is on a suppression list, has previously bounced, reported spam, or when the message does not meet sending requirements.
Q: Can a Delivered email still go to spam?
A: Yes. A Delivered status confirms that the recipient's mail server accepted the message. The recipient's email provider may still apply additional filtering rules that place the email in Spam, Junk, or another folder.
